The logical unrest had a gigantic impact with respect to why individuals figured they could be God. Van Doren clarifies how parts of science drove these people to accept that they could be God in the event that they could see how the world functioned and why it worked that way. He clarifies that there are five pieces of science. These pieces of science were science, material science, arithmetic, science, and brain research. With the information on these five pieces of science, individuals figured they could address any inquiries by utilizing logical strategy and assume the job of God in clarifying how the world functions, why it works that way, what the world was comprised of, and furthermore what individuals think and why they think a specific path in specific circumstances. Science permitted individuals to know the make up of the world and individuals. Material science and arithmetic permitted people to perceive how the world functioned and why it worked a specific w ay. Brain research demonstrated the individuals that we could make sense of what and how individuals thought by doing investigates gatherings of individuals.      Van Doren clarifies how these five pieces of science are worse than a specific one. He clarifies how everybody in that day accepted that the world was level and not round as we probably am aware it today. He clarifies how they felt that science is the one technique that will permit them to show up at the â€Å"truth.† He clarifies how science was a typical thing that â€Å"everyday people† could comprehend. This persuaded they could respond to a great deal of inquiries hence making them figure they could be God. Van Doren reveals to us that there are three supposition of science. The principal supposition of science is that we can depict what goes on in a physical world. He clarified how researchers are both legit and humble. They never guarantee beyond what they can demonstrate and love to discuss their discoveries with different researchers or artists. This first suspicion gives individuals the thoughts that we can recognize what is happening in the phy sical world, why it goes that way, and how it works. The second supposition of science is we can clarify why something is occurring. This arrangements more with genuine things and not thoughts or emotions as Van Doren said. This presumption managed the issues concerning the outer world and its working instead of the internal part and how it functions.

We do not plan to send out any admissions decisions by mail, though admitted students will receive information on their financial aid package and Campus Preview Weekend in the mail next week. This year, we received 17,909 applications for admission, a record number for us and an 8% increase over last year. We admitted 1715 students for an admit rate of 9.6%, or fewer than one of every ten applicants. Because of the size and the strength of the applicant pool there were a great many incredible students whom we were simply unable to offer admission to. All applicants should know that the admissions staff gave them full consideration in our process. These decisions are not easy to make. But we also know that those students to whom we could not offer admission will find wonderful homes elsewhere and go on to do terrific things for the world. We will have more news about the class to come. In the meantime, we have provided three open threads below where admitted, waitlisted, and not admitted students can talk amongst themselves. We ask only that the comments be kept friendly and civil in our community.

Themes, Motifs and Symbols in Oscar Wilde’s the Picture of Dorian Gray free essay sample

The only published novel by Oscar Wilde, which appeared in Lippincott’s Monthly Magazine in 1890, was seen as immoral and scandalous, so the editors of the magazine censored about five hundred words without Wilde’s knowledge. Even with that, the novel was not received very well. Disappointed with this, Wilde revised his novel, added a preface, where he explains his philosophy of art, and six new chapters. Since Wilde was devoted to aestheticism, he believed that art had no purpose, nor moral nor political, because art is beautiful and therefore has worth. His attitude was revolutionary, since Victorian England believed that art could be used for social education and moral enlightenment. Aestheticism fought to free art from this belief. The aestheticists were motivated as much by a contempt for bourgeois morality, a sensibility embodied in Dorian Gray by Lord Henry, whose every word seems designed to shock the ethical certainties of the burgeoning middle class, as they were by the belief that art does not need to possess any other purpose than being beautiful. We will write a custom essay sample on Themes, Motifs and Symbols in Oscar Wilde’s the Picture of Dorian Gray or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page There are two works of art that dominate the novel. Basil’s painting and the mysterious yellow book that Lord Henry gives Dorian. They are not presented in aesthetic but in Victorian sensibilities, which means that both the portrait and the French novel have a purpose. The portrait is a kind of a mysterious mirror which shows Dorian the physical aging his body will not go through, while the French novel is a kind of a map which leads Dorian further towards infamy. Readers know nothing about the composition of the French novel, but they can see Basil’s state of mind while painting the picture. He states that all art is â€Å"unconscious, ideal, and remote† but his portrait of Dorian is everything but unconscious, ideal and remote. The first principle of aestheticism is that art serves no other purpose than to offer beauty, and throughout The Picture of Dorian Gray, beauty reigns. It is a way to revive the tired senses, as indicated by the effect that Basil’s painting has on the cynical Lord Henry. It is also a way of escaping the brutalities of the world. Dorian distances himself, as well as his consciousness, from the horrors of his actions by devoting himself to the tudy of beautiful things—music, jewels, rare tapestries. In a society that cherishes beauty, youth and physical attractiveness become extremely valuable. When they meet for the very first time, Lord Henry reminds Dorian that soon enough he will lose his most precious attributes. The Duchess of Monmouth says to Lord Henry that he values these things too much, and indeed, Dorian’s ev entual demise confirms that. And although beauty and youth remain of greatest importance at the end of the novel, the novel suggests that the price one must pay for them is extremely high, which Dorian proved by giving his soul for them. Logically, society which cherishes beauty above all else is a society which is shallow and values only what is on the surface. What matters most to Dorian, Lord Henry, and their polite company, is not whether a man is good at heart but rather whether he is handsome. Despite Dorian’s â€Å"mode of life,† he remains at the heart of the London social scene because of the â€Å"innocence† and â€Å"purity of his face. † Both the portrait and the French novel have a great influence on Dorian’s life. They influence him to behave in an immoral way for almost twenty years. By reflecting on Dorian’s power over Basil and deciding that he would like to seduce Dorian in the same way, Lord Henry points out that there is something fascinating in practicing this kind of influence. Falling under influence cannot be avoided. Basil’s idolatry of Dorian leads to his murder, and Dorian’s devotion to Lord Henry’s hedonism and the yellow book precede his own downfall. In a novel that prizes individualism, the sacrifice of one’s self, whether to another person or to a work of art, leads to one’s destruction. The picture of Dorian Gray, â€Å"the most magical of mirrors,† shows him what he has been spared- physical aging. For a period of time, Dorian has only one goal in life, and lives according to it, not paying attention to his conscience, and that goal is only pleasure. On the other hand, Dorian’s portrait represents his conscience and haunts him. The portrait knows his crimes, it reminds Dorian of the cruelty he has shown towards Sybil Vane, and the murder of Basil Hallward. Another motif which plays a large role in Oscar Wilde’s novel is the homoerotic bond between men. Basil’s portrait of Dorian develops from his adoration of Dorian’s beauty, and Lord Henry has a strong desire to seduce Dorian. This relationship between men represents aesthetic values that Wilde was fighting for, because it brought him back to antique times, when youth and beauty was appreciated most, and it was fundamental in society and often expressed through a relationship between two men. Since Wilde was a homosexual himself, living in an intolerant society, fighting for this philosophy was his way of justifying his lifestyle. He thought homosexuality was a sign of refined culture and not a sin. He thought that a relationship between an elder and a younger man resembled the tradition of Plato, Michelangelo and Shakespeare. The use of the white colour can represent Dorian’s transition from the figure of innocence to the figure of degradation. White usually implies innocence and blankness, and it is true in the case when the readers are first introduced with Dorian. And that ‘’white purity’’ actually catches Lord Henry’s attention. Basil tries to invoke whiteness when he finds out that Dorian has sacrificed his innocence. He stares horrified at the portrait and quotes a biblical verse from the Book of Isaiah: â€Å"Though your sins be as scarlet, yet I will make them as white as snow† but to no avail, since Dorian’s innocence is lost. When the white colour appears again, it is seen on the face of James Vane, but now it is transformed from the colour of innocence to the colour of death. At the end of the novel, Dorian yearns for his â€Å"rose-white boyhood† but the hope is lost, and he cannot wash away his sins. In the novel, the portrait stands for the most magical of mirrors, duplicating the corruption of Dorian’s soul, while his ageless handsome face is a mask hiding the soul’s progress in evil. The mask can hide the lack of identity and emptiness, and although everyone fears exposure of his own nothingness, to others one’s mask is one’s face, the only one they know. On the other hand, the mirror reflects not only the mask but the hidden truth of one’s face. While the mask is to be worn for the world, the mirror is used for facing the truth about oneself. The mask is for others’ inspection, the mirror for one’s own introspection. The opium dens, which is located in a remote and derelict section of London, represents Dorian’s state of mind. After killing Basil, Dorian goes there to forget the awful crime he has committed by losing consciousness and becoming numb. He has a canister of opium at home, but he still travels to the dark dens, which represents the degradation of his soul. Another representative of Dorian’s dark and tortured soul is James Vane, the brother of Sibyl Vane. He represents Dorian’s conscience, as well as the relative seeking revenge. He is like a ghost with his white face, and he makes Dorian accept the crimes he has committed. Lord Henry gives Dorian a yellow book, which is only described as a French novel, which describes the experiences of its main character who is seeking pleasure. Dorian buys a dozen of copies of this book, and bases his life and actions on it, and in this way the French novel becomes a sort of a holy grail to Dorian. The book represents the profound and damaging influence that art can have over an individual and serves as a warning to those who would surrender themselves so completely to such an influence. In the end we can see that the philosophy that Oscar Wild proposes in The Picture of Dorian Gray can be extremely seductive and liberating. Wilde shows the readers that the society and conscience both make living the philosophy he fought for extremely difficult and, in the end, even painful.

Athens Sparta essays

Athens Sparta essays Greek culture in 400-500 B.C.E. achieved greatness through two city-states, called Sparta and Athens. To better understand the interaction between Sparta and Athens and their desire for Greece to be a strong nation, it is imperative to know the situation of these two city-states in the early 400s B.C.E. Throughout this essay I will briefly describe Athenian and Spartan social structure in the Classical age. In particular, their culture, military, and the role of women within society. Athens had a democratic government and a dynamic society. They were culturally open to trade, painting, sculpture, architecture, literature, poetry, and philosophy. Athens had become the second most powerful Greek city-state because of their wealth, trade, navy, large population, and great harmony of art and learning. Athens was made up of three distinct classes, slaves, citizens, and foreigners. Each class had a specific list of duties and responsibilities. Wealthy citizens paid to attend formalized schools in the gymnasium. Citizens could own land and slaves, but not all did because they differed in wealth. Also, citizens had equal formal rights, and participated in the year round religious festivals. Slaves and foreigners, on the other hand, did trade work and housework, but were denied citizenship. Due to the Athenian democratic government, there was a wider range of participation from the citizens. Many of them participated in public election and lotteries. Sparta had a political form of organization known as an Oligarchy, which consisted of five ephors and two kings who served as high priests and leaders in war. Their government was founded on the principle that the life of individuals, from the moment of birth, belonged to the state. Sparta hoped to ensure that only those who were physically fit would survive to become the best soldiers for the city-state. Sparta prided itself not on art and learning, but on the brave ...

Understanding Typed Constants in Delphi

Understanding Typed Constants in Delphi When Delphi invokes an event handler, the old values of local variables are wiped out. What if we want to keep track of how many times a button has been clicked? We could have the values persist by using a unit-level variable, but it is generally a good idea to reserve unit-level variables only for sharing information. What we need are usually called static variables or typed constants in Delphi. Variable or Constant Typed constants can be compared to initialized variables-variables whose values are defined on entry to their block (usually event handler). Such a variable is initialized only when the program starts running. After that, the value of a typed constant persists between successive calls to their procedures. Using typed constants is a very clean way of implementing automatically initialized variables. To implement these variables without typed constants, well need to create an initialization section that sets the value of each initialized variable. Variable Typed Constants Although we declare typed constants in the const section of a procedure, it is important to remember that they are not constants. At any point in your application, if you have access to the identifier for a typed constant youll be able to modify its value. To see typed constants at work, put a button on a blank form, and assign the following code to the OnClick event handler: procedure TForm1.Button1Click(Sender: TObject) ; const   Ã‚   clicks : Integer 1; //not a true constant begin    Form1.Caption : IntToStr(clicks) ;    clicks : clicks 1; end; Notice that every time you click on the button, forms caption increments steadily. Now try the following code: procedure TForm1.Button1Click(Sender: TObject) ; var   Ã‚   clicks : Integer; begin    Form1.Caption : IntToStr(clicks) ;    clicks : clicks 1; end; We are now using an uninitialized variable for the clicks counter. Notice that weird value in the forms caption after you click on the button. Constant Typed Constants You have to agree that idea of modifiable constants sounds a bit strange. In 32 bit versions of Delphi Borland decided to discourage their use, but support them for Delphi 1 legacy code. We can enable or disable Assignable typed constants on the Compiler page of the Project Options dialog box. If youve disabled Assignable typed constants for a given project, when you attempt to compile previous code Delphi will give you Left side cannot be assigned to error upon compilation. You can, however, create assignable typed constant by declaring: {$J} const clicks : Integer 1; {$J-} Therefore, the first example code looks like: procedure TForm1.Button1Click(Sender: TObject) ; const {$J}   Ã‚   clicks : Integer 1; //not a true constant {$J-} begin    Form1.Caption : IntToStr(clicks) ;    clicks : clicks 1; end; Conclusion Its up to you to decide whether you want typed constants to be assignable or not. The important thing here is that besides ideal for counters, typed constants are ideal for making components alternately visible or invisible, or we can use them for switching between any Boolean properties. Typed constants can also be used inside TTimers event handler to keep track of how many times even has been triggered.

Self Evaluation Personal Statement Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

Self Evaluation - Personal Statement Example Moreover, daily newspapers and magazines contain news and articles about people from all over the world indicating people’s culture across the globe. Internet Internet is the best and fastest source of any type of information across the globe. Just a single query in search engines can give you an insight into any type of culture in a few seconds. Satellite Channels Satellite channels all over the world can be seen in one country. Dramas, cooking show, news channels, and documentary programs on channels such as national geographic, animal planet, discovery etc. help you increase your cultural knowledge. People Interaction The more you interact with people of different cultures, the more knowledge you gain about their traditions, religious activities, habits, language etc. Whether you are living with them or working with people of diverse cultures, you gain sufficient information about their culture with the passage of time. 2. How would you handle a management issue in your   organization that stems from a cultural dispute? As the time is moving towards making this place a global village, people from third world countries are moving towards progressed countries in search of a better job and better future. This results not only in providing sufficient workforce to such countries but also results in the formation of organizations with people belonging to different cultures and traditions. To manage the workforce in such an organization is a very challenging task as it requires you to get sufficient information about all people’s cultures and traditions. If a management issue arises in an organization because of the cultural differences, it should be handled carefully. Whenever a worker joins the company, he should be informed about the general rules and policies of the company. Moreover, the manager should have knowledge about the person’s culture that would help deal with him in the future. Now whenever a problem arises due to cultural dispu te, the manager should first analyze that he should provide the solution that does not conflict with the company’s policies. For example, if a company has a certain policy for giving no more than a one day leave near the project’s deadline then the manager cannot give an employee more than one holiday. The manager should find out a solution that is based on justice. He should consider cultures of both parties and take their opinions separately. In the end, he should design a solution that is a medium way between the both party’s opinions and should be justified. 3. Should the same rules and policies apply the same to  all people in a multinational, or should culture be taken into account when applying policies? The differences in the backgrounds can be problematic if you completely ignore people’s cultural values and traditions. Now the question arises whether the same policies should be applied to all people or should cultural diversity be taken into c onsideration? The answer is to choose the medium way. As far as performance and work is concerned, same policies should be designed for everyone. For example, dishonesty or shirking from work will result in punishment from the company’s side to every worker. Also, same rules of yearly leave will be applied to everyone. However, cultural differen

Womens Health and Rights Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

Womens Health and Rights - Essay Example Females have the capability of carrying a fetus in their wombs. It is a distinct characteristic of females that males would not be able to replicate. This makes females an important entity in the preservation of mankind. However, with such importance, are females given the same importance with regards to health information and breakthroughs compared to the males? Females are continuously proving to the society that they are just as capable as the male members of the civilization. This is despite the fact that there are differences between the characteristics of the two genders. There are specific distinctions in health needs between males and females. A female’s reproductive system is more complex than that of the male. It is during the adolescence when females experience a number of physical changes. This is the time when females start having their monthly menstruation period. There are certain discomforts that go together with this health condition uniquely present in female bodies. There is neither an excuse nor a medication that can stop this health event from happening. There are sites in the worldwide web that aims to report health information and concerns. One of these sites is WebMD.Com. As the site’s slogan goes, if a person is well-informed on how to take care of their bodies, these people would have better health and will be living a better life. This site does have a specific page for women’s health that addresses women’s needs to be able to gain better knowledge of their physical well-being. It is truly necessary for medical information websites to have pages that would address to women’s health. There are health conditions that need to be addressed especially when they will eventually lead to life threatening ailments. The issues that are being tackled at the site vary from puberty to menopause. Navigating to the page is only a click away from the homepage. It is good that WebMD presents this page exclusively for women’s health. Even men can use this page as a guide in understanding their partners especially when women are undergoing hormonal changes. There are a number of ailments that only a woman can acquire. This goes hand in hand with their ability to get pregnant. Even if this is given information, women’s health is often neglected as men’s health is often the given more attention and focus. It is quite alarming though that the most discussed aspect on the site is related to the reproductive system. Females are smart and can understand information just like as their male counterparts. Health conditions are not always on the good side. When females are faced with serious health problems, lay down the truth and do not sugar-coat the reality. Birth control is one of the aspects that affect the females more than the males. However, this may also be the cause of several reproductive disorders that women acquire during their lifetime. A female needs to intake pills or i nject contraceptives to be able to control hormones that are possible for them to conceive. What are not clearly stated though would be the after effects of these medicines to women who would eventually stop using them and acquire the desire to conceive? Instead of stating artificial birth control methods, to truly protect women’s health, medical sites or institutions should promote natural form of birth control that would not manipulate hormones or genes that might be the cause for infertility and other ailments as their side effects. When a reader does not research further, only the positive effects or the negative effect of the medication can be known which can be considered impartial. If this website would stand for its slogan, the possible negative effects of medications to women at the onset should be

Transcendental Meditation :: Blood Pressure Tranquility Papers

About forty years ago, Maharishi Mahesk Yogi pioneered the Transcendental Meditation program. The Transcendental Meditation technique is a natural, unforced practice that reduces stress and increases an individual’s mental and physical potential. TM (Transcendental Meditation) is often experienced for fifteen to twenty minutes twice a day. Typically, one meditates in the morning before eating breakfast; this practice helps the person start his day both alert and energized. The second meditation session occurs in the afternoon before dinner. During this practice, one washes away the stress accumulated over the day, and this session is the basis for a pleasurable evening and a restful night’s sleep (http://www.tm.org/book/chap_1.html). Maharishi’s Transcendental Meditation causes the mind and body to enter a unique, insightful state of mind that is both restful and alert. As the body benefits from a deep state of rest, the mind goes into a state of inner tra nquility and awareness. TM advocates claim that Transcendental Meditation is unlike any other forms of mediation or relaxation techniques. The TM program is more effective in reducing apprehension, improving mental health, increasing self-awareness, and reducing the abuse of cigarettes, drugs, and alcohol. Unlike hypnosis, Transcendental Meditation is normal and entails no proposals. The technique is simple to learn, is easy to practice, and does not include concentration or contemplation, which other forms of meditation and self- improvement do (http://www.tm.org/book/chap_9.html). â€Å"The result: Do less and accomplish more with greater energy, success, and satisfaction in everything you do† (http://www.tm.org/book/chap_9.html). A qualified teacher of the TM program is said to be the only person capable of teaching Transcendental Meditation. The course consists of seven steps. The first phase consists of an introductory lecture during which the individual is exposed to all of the possible benefits of the TM program. The second step, the preparatory lecture, teaches each person the procedure and the origin of the TM technique. Then, the individual must have an interview with a qualified teacher of the TM program. The fourth step includes personal instruction about how to learn the Transcendental Meditation technique. â€Å"Verification and Validation of Experiences† encompasses the final three phases. In the first of the three, the individual verifies the precision of the program and receives further instruction. Then, the person develops an understanding of the TM technique’s mechanics based on personal experiences.

Psychology & Understanding Human Behavior: the Individual

Psychology & Understanding Human Behavior: The Individual PSYC120-1203B-06 Introduction to Psychology IP5 Psychology & Understanding Human Behavior: The Individual President Barak Obama is who I have chosen to do my research and analysis on for this class as he is one of the most controversial people that I can think of today. With him being the President of the United States he is known all over the world. After being the President for almost four years a lot of what he has done in office has really upset a lot of people by him going against what the Presidents before him had worked so hard to establish. This country was built on Christian principles by our founding fathers and it seems that this country in the last 4 years has strayed very far from where it was and should be. With that being said I chose him because I wanted to delve into his childhood and his upbringing to see what if anything may have caused him to become who is known to be today. Barack Hussein Obama, ll was born August 4, 1961 in Honolulu, Hawaii. He is the older of two children. Barack is what you would consider bi-racial individual. His father’s name is Barack Obama, Sr. and he is African American. His mother’s name is Ann Dunham and she is from an English ancestry mixed with Scottish, German, Swiss, and Irish cultural backgrounds. His parents met when they were students at the University of Hawaii in 1960 in a Russian class. Barack’s father was a foreign student who was attending the college on a scholarship. His mother was originally from Wichita, Kansas. After the bombing of Pearl Harbor her father, Stanly enlisted in the service, and her mom got a job on the bomber assembly line. When the war ended her parents bought a house through the Federal Housing Program and finally after many moves the family ended up living in Hawaii. His parents got married on February 2, 1961 however they separated when his father went to Harvard University on scholarship and eventually the couple divorced in 1964 (Main article: Early Life and Career of Barack Obama). His mom later remarried an Indonesian man name Lolo Soetoro who was attending college in Hawaii as well. From the age of six until the age of ten Barack lived in a city called Jakarta where his younger sister Maya Soetoro Ng was born.In 1971 after being scared for her son’s life on several occasions and wanting him to get a good education, Ann decided to send her son to Hawaii to stay with his grandparents, Madelyn and Stanley Armour Dunham. He gained a scholarship under his grandparents’ guidance and attended a private preparatory school where he was one of three blacks. He started there in the fifth grade excelling in basketball. It was at that school when he became attentive to racism and what it meant being a black man. However, that did not keep him from graduating with honors in 1979.His mother was there to see his progress until having to leave in 1977 to go back and work in Indon esia as an anthropological field worker. She did however return back to Hawaii in 1994, but in 1995 she passed away from ovarian cancer. He struggled though with the fact of his father being absent from his life who he saw only once after his parents divorced for a short visit. At the age of 22 he learned that his father who had lost his legs in a previous car accident had now lost his life due to a car accident in Nairobi. After finishing high school, Obama took classes at Occidential College in Los Angeles for two years, and then later transferred to Columbia University in New York. Receiving his degree in 1983 from Columbia in political science and working in the business sector for two years, he moved to Chicago. He was involved in the communities, and started working on the South Side as a community organizer for low-income residents in the Roseland and the Altgeld Gardens Community. He also during this time joined the Trinity United Church of Christ even though he admitted that he wasn’t raised in a religious home.He also visited his relatives in Kenya as well as the graves of his father and paternal grandfather. Obama said that during his visits to these graves, â€Å"I saw that my life in America—the black life, the white life, the sense of abandonment I felt as a boy, the frustration and hope I'd witnessed in Chicago—all of it was connected with this small plot of earth an ocean away. † (2012, Biography. com) Upon his return from Kenya he entered Harvard Law School in 1988. This would be the beginning of a great life for Barack. The very next year, he met Michelle Robinson who was an associate at Sidley & Austin law firm in Chicago. She was assigned to be his adviser during a summer internship at the firm, soon after that they began dating. After he completed law school he decided to return back to Chicago where he joined the law firm of Miner, Barnhill & Galland as civil rights lawyer. He also during this time taught at the University of Chicago Law School, and he also help organize the voter registration drives form Bill Clinton’s 1992 presidential campaign. On October 3, 1992 he married Michelle and they moved to Kenwood on Chicago’s South Side. In 1998 their first daughter Malia was born followed by another daughter Sasha who was born in 2001. Obama’s work as an advocate is what actually helped him propel his start in politics. He ran for the Illinois State Senate as a Democrat and won the election in 1996. During his time there he worked with both Democrats and Republicans in putting together a legislature on ethics, as well as expanding health care services and early childhood education for the poor. He also created the state earned-income tax for poor people. In 2000 he had an unsuccessful run for Democratic seat of the U. S. House of Representatives. Though this failure did not stop him from putting together a campaign committee in 2002 to raise funds for the 2004 U. S Senate race which he won by 70% in November 2004. This was the largest electoral victory in Illinois history and made him only the third African American to be elected to the U. S. Senate since its reconstruction. February 2007 he announced his candidacy for the 2008 Democratic presidential nomination which put him in competition with Hilary Clinton who was then the Senator for New York. However, on June 3, 2008 he succeeded her and she gave her full support to his campaign. November 4, 2008 he defeated Republican candidate John McCain for the position of the U. S. President. On January 20, 2009, Barack Obama became the 44th President of the United States and the first African American to hold this office. The psychological perspective that I chose to discuss about Barack Obama was behavioristic. Reason being is because most people view behavioristic people as being controlled by their environment and think that they are the result of what they have learned from their environment. With that being said, Obama had what some would call a strike against him being that he was multiracial. With his mother being white and his father was being African American he was teased about his race and it was hard for him to fit in at times. Though he was considered a black man, he stayed with his grandparents and mother whom were Caucasian to the eye. Though being teased, he did his research and used it in his advantage. Both parents were smart, so he pretty much inherited their brains. His mother and father attended college, as well as his step-father.Barack excelled in school; he was a teacher, and a leader. Even though his environment was a tough one growing up Obama became a successful man who has accomplished more than most people in his 51 years. The Humanistic Psychology has its strengths and weaknesses. One of the strengths is that it shifts the focus of the behavior to the individual or whole person rather than the unconscious mind, genes and observable behavior etc. It also s atisfied most people’s idea of what being human means because it values personal ideals and self-fulfillment (McLeod, S. A. 2007). Carl Rogers believed that people have one basic motive, and that is the tendency to self-actualization. He believed that for a person to achieve self-actualization that they must be in a state of congruence. In other words he felt that when a person feels that they have become who they want to become and it is congruent with their actual behavior then they have achieved self-actualization (McLeod, S. A. , 2007). Maslow on the other hand felt that most people would never achieve this level which was his 5th level on his hierarchy of needs pyramid. He felt that in order for people to progress from level to level certain things needed to be met. In order to reach that 5th level you would need to fulfill the 1st through the 4th. These levels are the biological and psychological needs, safety needs, belongingness and love need with the 4th level being t he esteem needs (McLeod, S. A. , 2007). This theory’s weakness would be that with the basic concept behind the theory of being free will, it is difficult to both develop a treatment technique and study the effectiveness of this technique. While this theory may work for a simple issue, you wouldn’t use this approach to treat someone for something like schizophrenia. In conclusion what I have learned from psychology is that everyone is unique and we all tend to have our quirks. Will we ever understand everyone completely? Most likely not because being the humans that we are we change constantly. Our environment and the people we associate with play a tremendous part in who we are and in whom we become. Just like in the workplace, people come from all various walks of life working together in a small office like I do may or may not always get along. Can we use psychology to try an understand them? Sure, I believe that is possible, but you can only learn why an individual ac ts the way they do by being able study them from the beginning of their life to now. To be honest I find psychology a little stressful so for me to actually want to pursue it outside of this class and maybe do it at my workplace is kind of out of the question at this present moment. For me I will leave it up to the professionals who have decided that they want to spend their time dissecting people and their strange minds. One thing that psychology has taught me is that never to make a snap judgment on the way someone is behaving because there is always an underlying cause for their behavior. This is one thing that I will do my best not to do anymore at my workplace or life in general. You never know what one has been through or may be going through, so until you have that understanding never make an assumption and categorize them. The following statement, â€Å"you can’t understand others unless you understand yourself† to me does carry a lot of truth. The feedback that I have received from both my peers and my professor in this class has caused me to take a deeper look inside myself as a person. To see what others think of me by what I say or write has definitely been an eye opener. To see myself through another person’s eyes is what all of us should try to do on a daily basis with the people we are surrounded by. I was always told, â€Å"you don’t need to worry about what other people think of you† but sometimes you just can’t help but wonder what goes through someone’s mind when you walk into a room or say something to them.Psychology in itself does allow you to put on different lenses to see things about yourself and others in a different light. It is just like putting on different lenses on camera allows you to adjust how far away or how close you see things, psychology does just the same. One man named Same Gosling states in his article Mixed Signals on psychologytoday. com, â€Å"we think we know ourselves better than others do but yet we are biased when it comes to seeing ourselves in a good light that we become strangers to ourselves. In other words we need to take the time to listen to people when they do give us feedback on ourselves as it will help us in the long run and not just take it as jealous criticism. Honestly, I will never again allow myself to think that someone is criticizing me because they are jealous. Instead I will take what they say and allow myself to re-examine what I have said or done to cause them to think that way about me. We are all human and none of us regardless of what we think are perfect. We make mistakes just like everyone else. We say and do things to cause harm to others just as they do to us.However, if we just take a minute to see our behavior through their eyes then we might can understand ourselves better and in turn understand them as well. There are all kinds of psychology resources that we can utilize to help understand ourselves and the wor ld around us if we will just take the time to search them out. There are numerous self-help books in bookstores today, and there are plenty of resources on the web such as articles, personality tests, and more. We should do all we can to explore these resources to get a better understanding of our world. If you take a look at the world today there are a lot of hurt, angry, and confused people out there who no one seems to notice or care about. We have become a society that is so driven on a me, me, me attitude that the rest of the world seems to have faded away from our view. If we use what psychology has taught us to explore why people are hurt, angry, confused and acting the way they are then we might be able to help them get to the root of their issues and deal with them. Psychology to me is all about getting to the heart of the matter, finding the root cause and dealing with it.I say let’s stop medicating people, or covering things up and pretending it is all okay when it isn’t. Let’s use what psychology has taught us to try to understand people and why they act the way they do. In order to do that though, we have to start with ourselves in this process because how can we effectively help anyone if we can’t even help ourselves? References 1. Edwards, Roberta (2008). The Lone Ranger And Tonto Fistfight In Heaven Analysis

The Wrong American Dream: Struggling to Assimilate in â€Å"The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fist Fight in Heaven† â€Å"Kill the Indian and save the Man,† sounds more like something out of a dystopian novel than an educational campaign slogan, but in 1887 those were the words chosen by Army Lt. Richard Henry Pratt to garner public support for government’s attempt to forcefully â€Å"Americanize† Native Americans. Native Americans that survived violence were coerced into wearing white man’s clothes, cutting their hair, and not speaking their native languages to â€Å"encourage† them to blend in (Reyhner). Gertrude Stein By Pablo Picasso And The Toilet Of Venus

This formal art analysis will compare and contrast the line, color, light, and composition of Gertrude Stein by Pablo Picasso and â€Å"The Toilet Of Venus by Francois Boucher. The formal qualities of these paintings provide a classically orientated approach to the individual subject, which provide similar methods of composition and line. However, Picasso tends to chose earthy color tones in contrast to the brightly colored image provided by Boucher of Madame de Pompadour. More so, Boucher provides a much more lighted environment for his subject, which is dissimilar to the muted light of Gertrude stein in an interior setting. More so, Picasso tends to present Gertrude Stein in a room with very low lighting, which expands upon the dim nature of this painting. These paintings define the differing nature of lighting in the classical mode, which tends to show the differing styles of application that each painter utilized in differing historical periods. The use of extremely highly it settings was a common practice for Boucher in the 18th century, which defines the contrasting elements of muted light of modernism that Picasso utilizes in his portrait of Gertrude Stein. The use of color in Boucher’s painting is much more intense, in contrast to Picasso’s use of earth tones. Boucher utilizes aquamarine, pinks, whites, and golden colors (on the furniture), which defines the overt of bright coloration in the rococo style. The overt use of flesh tones is also complimented by the use of pink and white to accentuate the classically nature of this piece. Feminist Icon Betty Friedan Testified - 1181 Words

On January 29th, 1970, feminist icon Betty Friedan testified before the Senate Judicial committee to protest the appointment of Judge George Harrold Carswell to Supreme Court Justice. With this testimony, Friedan hoped to persuade the committee to reject Carswell’s nomination. In her testimony, Friedan was clear, concise, and effective. Friedan employed many different techniques to provide examples and backings for her assertions. Within the first few sentences of her speech, the activist establishes credibility and states her reason for being there. As president of the National Organization of Women, known informally as N.O.W., Betty Friedan speaks out against the â€Å"discrimination against women in the employment, education, and in all†¦show more content†¦Friedan also uses statistics to remind the court that 4.1 million mothers in the working force have children under the age of six and that they â€Å"comprise 38.9 percent of the nearly 10.6 million mothers in the labor force today† (Friedan). The activist continues to use evidential elements and statistics in her testimony, stating â€Å"for every mother of children who wor ked in 1940, ten mothers are working today, an increase from slightly over 1.5 million to nearly 11 million†(Friedan). Friedan also makes point that a man applying for the same position would not be denied because he was father to pre-school aged children. The use factual evidence makes many of Friedan’s assertions irrefutable and provides solid backing for her case against Carswell. However, Friedan does not just use factual evidence. The activist also appeals to emotions in her testimony, and although this may not be the most effective tool against her targeted audience, it does give her backing beyond the factual. Friedan asks the committee to place themselves in the shoes of those she fights for, and asks for empathy. To paraphrase, Friedan asks them to imagine themselves being denied for reelection, or applying for a job at a company or law firm or university and being told they are ineligible simply because they had a child (Friedan). This anointing proved that Jesus was God! The public life of Jesus began with His Baptism on the shore of the Jordan River. It ended with Jesus commanding the Apostles to â€Å"go and make disciples of all, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and the Son and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that He had commanded them. † These Words of Jesus from the Holy Bible teach the Christians the great importance of the Sacrament of Baptism. These Words of Jesus from the Holy Bible teach the Christians the great importance of the Sacrament of Baptism. This is the most beautiful thing that happens to a person during the Sacrament of Baptism, something that most Christians do not even realize. This transformation is what it means to be reborn. God actually creates a new heart and a new spirit within the convert who is being baptized. The person is truly not the same anymore, part of his creation having been changed. When Jesus commanded the Apostles to go into the entire world and to preach the Gospel to the whole creation, that those who believe be baptized and saved, Jesus made faith an important part of the Sacrament of Baptism along with the forgiveness of sin. A person cannot be baptized unless he sincerely repents of his sinful nature and has faith in Jesus Christ as Savior, the Giver of the Holy Spirit and the new birth. Before receiving the Sacrament of Baptism, the old self, the heart and human spirit, were stained by the original sin and all the other sins that the person had committed before being baptized. During the Sacrament of Baptism, all of this was crucified with Jesus so that the sinful body may be destroyed, the person no longer being a slave to sin. When a person is baptized, the old inclination of his heart and spirit die and are buried with Christ. When a person is baptized, he is devoted to God. He has a responsibility to promote Christianity. Some people choose to become living sacrifices so they can enjoy a greater daily personal relationship with God. This is seen in those who consecrate their lives to God, the priests, the religious brothers and sisters and the missionaries. These Christians are required by their consecration to do missionary work according to the mandate of their religious Orders to which they belong. And Baptism was a means of grace. God’s grace came upon Jesus when He was baptized. God grace comes upon any humans when they are baptized. It is just that if a human is not baptized, a belief in God is most likely going to lead that person to wanting to receive God’s grace. However, it is only God and Jesus that knows the heart of that human. There are certainly unbaptized humans that purely believe in God and Jesus. Let us remember not to judge upon if a person is baptized or not. After all, it is not said those who are unbaptized will perish. It says those that do not believe will parish. A few things I will discuss about American made manufactures will be the quality they put forth in designing these vehicles, the job security it helps with in America and how American manufactures have now stepped up to the plate with their new innovated designs for the auto industry. Let’s take it a step further J. D. Power Associates recently released their results of the â€Å"2012 dependability survey†. This survey ranked 37 different automakers based upon how many complaints Vehicle owners reported. To no surprise the survey showed that two of the top four ranking vehicles were held by luxury car makers Lexus, Porsche you can’t argue that. But right behind them followed two American car makers Lincoln and Cadillac that’s 2 out of 4 for America. Slide 2 Here is a graph on how America made Quality vehicles compared to the foreign vehicle makers. Look people it speaks for itself here are the true facts. J. D. Power and Associates study of the quality of American made vehicles shows that American made vehicles have been produced with better quality since the 1999 study. Both foreign and domestic car makers have steadily declined in their quality but still holding strong Domestics are still on top. Slide 3 A U. S. News report showed that Ford and GM have increased their customer satisfaction over the past five years and have been rated the highest of all vehicle manufactures in the past two years in a row. With Ford at 87% and GM at 84. % these studies don’t lie they come from real customers and real vehicle owners. American’s can and do build quality and with quality you get a product that last longer and is more dependable. Slide 4 The Ford focus was voted best small compact car and won the J. D. Buick also beat out foreign makers Toyota and Lexus From 8 out of 11 car segment awards the car manufacture GM has climbed to the top with their new models with three first place finishes in best all-around, best designed vehicle, and at something we all like to hear when it comes to purchasing a vehicle lowest pricing, but most reliable. Slide 7 Slide 8 Well let’s talk about what the auto industry does for us Americans. Well for starters Creating American made jobs creates American revenue. Slide 9 That revenue is like the food chain in the animal planet it revolves in equality for the American economy. When we don’t buy American vehicles we are hurting America’s economy, not buying these American made cars hurt the manufactures. The more American made vehicles we sell the better job growth is and the better Americas economy can get. It’s a no brainer people. Slide 10 According to the Congressional Budget office in 2011 over the past decade 100,000 jobs have been lost in America’s auto industry from importing and manufacturing products overseas. GM and Chrysler where both bailed out by the Obama industry we all remember that, while American manufacturer Ford still ran strong, but in doing so they created more jobs, because it was viable to the American people to finally step up and help with the economy. The auto industry is an integral part of our nation. The Detroit car industry is like the aircraft manufactures both private industries’ play an enormous part on are economic growth. When you buy that American made vehicle you help America with job security, lower vehicle cost and create innovated technology for other car manufactures to design, just to try and keep up with today’s trends. Listen people American’s have been asking for this for years now the message we have all asked for has been answered. â€Å"Make a product that suits the needs of the consumer, and we will buy†. This has been fulfilled by the American auto industry of today. So stop waiting and start buying. Innovated design Slide 11 America does make fuel-efficient vehicles. Such as the Chevy volt that gets an estimated 93 to 37 Mpg. Talk about gas miliage people. Now who would have thought that America could keep up with these innovated fuel designs? Oh, but they have and they are not only building these vehicles to keep up, but also staying on the top of the charts as having some of the top Fuel efficient vehicles. Take the Ford Fusion or maybe the Ford Escape or Chevy Malibu to name a few these vehicles rank among the top in fuel economy in today’s industry. These vehicles are not only keeping up with today’s auto manufactures they are staying ahead. The American auto industry is now allowing â€Å"Payment protection plans† on their vehicles like Hyundai and other foreign auto makers. Most foreign products are made very cheap and are imported from poor nations. You ever heard that saying â€Å"Made by the cheapest bidder† Well that’s how some of these foreign vehicles parts are produced. Who wants to own one of these. Slide 12 Slide 13 Did you know that the Ford industry has been rated #1 the last two years in a row for having the best quality and lowest priced vehicle’s basically the best bang for your buck. Slide 14 Slide 15 Well the Ford Fiesta has been ranked #1 by KBB two years running in the small compact car line at just over $12,000 and in second also a Slide 16 domestic vehicle manufacture is the Chevy Aveo yes its ugly but it still serves a purpose and it’s also rated the best bang for your buck vehicle at just over $13,000. Now that you have the knowledge of why to buy an American made vehicle. You should understand that there is no good reason to buy a foreign made vehicle and every reason not to. There are cars built right here in America that are of equal or better quality. Buying an American made car is one way for ordinary individuals to make that small difference in today’s economy and securing jobs for future Americans, the same way environmentalist have been pushing hybrid vehicles America has innovated their vehicle’s designs to not only compare to the foreign auto market, but be rated higher than those foreign vehicle manufactures. Introduction: I. How many times have you thought about wanting to work out to keep up a â€Å"fit and healthy† lifestyle, but did not know the criteria for a certain workout or even how much you should be doing during a week? Making physical education in grades kindergarten through 12th grade will help teach you these lifelong skills. Learning how to live a healthy lifestyle B. Avoiding obesity C. Decreasing depression and anxiety Body: I. Children need to learn how to live a healthy lifestyle. A. According to Jessica Barron from an article on Associated Content, â€Å"Physical education is necessary in schools to effectively teach children how to manage their lives in a healthy way. Children are less likely to care about their health if they are not told why health is important than children who are educated about nutrition and exercise. † B. While physical education needs to educate students in the classroom about how to eat better and maintain a healthy lifestyle, they also need to learn how sports can be enjoyable. According to an article written by Jessica Barron on Associated Content, most children do not know that sports can be fun and enjoyable if they are not made to at least try them. Without physical education, these children will never be trying any sports. Sometimes they even miss finding a hidden talent. C. According to the American Heart Association, elementary students should be required to have at least 150 minutes per week, while middle school students should be required to have at least 225 minutes per week, and high school students have to complete a physical education requirement prior to graduation. D. If learning how to live a healthy lifestyle is engrained into your memory, you are more likely to continue doing it when you graduate high school and attend college, which is something we can all find relative. Transition: Along with learning how to live a healthier lifestyle, the risk of obesity as a teenager and adult can be avoided with a better lifestyle. II. Obesity is a continuing problem among children. When children do not learn how to take care of their bodies, it can follow them into their adult life, which increases health risks majorly. A. Nearly 10 million children ages 6-19 are considered overweight. (American Heart Association). B. â€Å"In 1971 only 4% of overweight adolescents made up the population. That number has nearly quadrupled into 17% in 2003† (American Heart Association). C. Physical education needs to begin early and continue all throughout high school (K-12) because nearly two-thirds of Americans are overweight, and one in five four year olds are already obese according to The USA Today. D. Obesity can cause increased risk in certain health issues, including heart disease, stroke, diabetes, cancer, gallbladder disease, and osteoarthritis, cited from the WebMD. Transition: By making physical education mandatory, obesity can be avoided along with decreasing depression and anxiety, which will ultimately help weight as well. III. Physical education can help maintain a positive attitude and decrease depression. This is crucial during teenage years because you are transitioning through different stages and friendships. A. After conducting an experiment in young females, psychologists found that after 5 50-minute light jogging/exercise programs for 8 weeks, depressive states significantly decreased compared to young females who just did daily activities (European Public Health Association). B. â€Å"One recent study found that a good workout could boost your level of serotonin, a brain chemical that is linked to mood,† according to Kate Lee, a consumer health activist. C. Increasing this serotonin is exactly what children need in their lives to decrease signs of depression. D. According to the American Psychological Association, suicide, which is mainly caused by depression, is the third highest death rate among teenagers. Physical exercise being made mandatory in schools can help prevent this. E. This statistic should be widely remembered when certain lobbyists begin advocating against physical education because schools cannot fund it, or because physical education is not in the standard â€Å"academic curriculum. Transition: If physical exercise and education is something that can fight against depression, then why should schools be cutting it out of their curriculums and adding in harder academic classes where the students are concentrating for eight straight hours a day? Conclusion: I. After the points I have given, you should be able to see why physical education must be mandatory in our school systems for grades kindergarten through 12th gra de. II. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle and exercising is key to a happier life and mood day to day. Decreasing anxiety will make you feel better overall, therefore keeping your weight at a healthy level. III. Physical education and proper exercise can do no harm, therefore why should it not be in school systems all over the country? Connective: First let us look at the landfill. Or as Daniel Pike in the state journal register calls it â€Å"the graveyard of a disposable society. † II. Body A. Consumers are quick to buy and do not think when it comes time to dispose of the waste. 1. According to factmonster. com 62% of municipal waste is dumped in the landfill. A single individual contributes roughly 4 pounds of that waste per day. In that waste you’ll find tons of glass, tons of paper and cardboard; also enormous tons of food residues, yard trimmings, textiles, and plastics currently, there are over 3,000 active landfills in the US. 2. A series on the history channel called â€Å"†life after people† discusses how varies landmarks, the environment, and certain â€Å"stuff† will look like or be like when this earth is no longer inhabited by people. Though I won’t share my views on the particle subject, I did find the episode about waste very empowering. I would like to share that with you. www. history. com/shows/life-after-people/videos/life-after-people-trash Connective: Now let’s look at ways to keep waste out of the landfills. B. The answer to help alleviate the overuse of landfills are reducing, reusing, and recycling of waste. 1. Reducing your waste should be thought of first. If you don’t have the waste to begin with than you don’t have to worry about where it is going to end up. According to Monique Beaudin, who wrote the article â€Å"Putting the first â€Å"R† into action; using the ‘Reduce’ step makes a bigger impact than you would think. † Printed in The Gazette, 2010 â€Å"Reducing is often in the shadow of the easier R-recycling. One specific way that will reduce waste is coming up with the holidays. Giving gifts can produce lots of waste whether it be, packaging of the item and/or the wrapping paper around the packaging. In the same article mentioned above by Monique Beaudin, she encourages holiday shoppers to buy less packaged gifts and give an experience, such as concert tickets for a gift. Therefore saving waste. Something to also consider when being mindful of reducing is buying bulk food items. This will help eliminate packaging waste and will usually be cheaper per ounce. Saving you money. Buying bulk will also help you with food waste. The important thing to remember when you want to save money and eliminate waste by buying bulk is to prepare a meal plan before you buy. A meal plan will encourage you to eat at home reducing the temptation of eating fast food resulting in wrappers that will end up in the trash. When I do my meal planning for the week I will always leave a few lunches and a dinner slot open for leftovers, so that I don’t have the option to throw food away. 2. The second rule regarding the 3R’s is reusing. This can be, but is not limited to reusing your own waste for a different purpose. For example, using a leftover coffee can for loose nails or screws, or even washing and reusing a plastic zip-loc bag instead of throwing it in the garbage. Thrift shopping is a way of reusing someone else’s unwanted goods. As I spoke about in an earlier speech about thrifting, I included many locations and ways to thrift, also the benefits to the shopper and the donator. One place in particular was shopping at the local boys and girls club. I personally shop there, keeping my eyes open for a good deal. For example, the pair of jeans that I am wearing today was purchased from this store just a few months ago. I paid only $8. 0 for this pair of Lucky Jeans and according to buckle. com, a retailer for lucky jeans the retail price is $99. 00 that is a savings to me of $91. 00. I am not the type to worry about name brands, but quality usually does cost more. If I can get a quality pair of jeans at a fraction on the price, I am glad to shop at the thrift store. I am thankful to the person that made the donation of the lucky jeans and they can benefit from that donation. According to the IRS webpage, IRS. Gov it explains that an individual can donate items like clothing, household furniture and furnishings, a car or boat, even taxidermy. The donations are appraised, by the donator, and recorded. At the time of filing taxes if the donation equals at least $500 for the year, the donator may take advantage of the tax benefits. Simply summarized, reusing benefits the consumer and the donator while keeping items out of the landfill. 3. Let’s now look at recycling, the most thought of way to elimate waste in the landfill. According to the Environmental Protection Agency webpage, EPA. gov â€Å"Recycling turns materials that would otherwise become waste into valuable resources. Collecting used bottles, cans, and newspapers and taking them to the curb or to a collection facility is just the first in a series of steps that generates a host of financial, environmental, and social returns. Some of these benefits accrue locally as well as globally. † Our family benefits from recycling so we take it somewhat serious. In terms that we recycle everything that can be. Every month we take our recyclables, all plastic, steel, glass, paper and aluminum cans, to Minnkota, the local recycling center, and except the return in the form of a check. If you would prefer not to take cash, Minnkota has the ability to donate your profit to any local establishments. There are 54 organizations to choose from including, boy scouts, churches and the city pound. Minnkota pays a penny a pound on all material, although aluminum cans yield a higher return, which I recently received . 45 cents per pound. This past month, the check I received, for 1 month’s recycleables for our family of 3 was $7. 45. This may not seem like much, but it will add up.
